Slugs

Slug counts from baiting and trapping on the surface represent only a fraction of the total population. Slugs are hermaphrodites, and a single pair can hatch between 50 and 150 eggs every 4 to 6 weeks.

About Slugs

Identify slugs by the unique damage they cause to leaves and flowers. Slug grazing creates irregular holes with smooth edges. Slugs grazing on seedlings results in characteristic shredding of blades. Slugs are nocturnal, making them harder to identify than snails.

Damage

Slugs can cause significant damage to grass grown for seed, impacting stand and yield. They are also a major threat to plant nurseries. The consistent mist and steady moisture ideal for seed germination are also ideal for slugs to thrive. Slugs on the soil surface graze on seedlings starting at emergence. Below the soil surface, slugs feed on seeds, preventing emergence or damaging seedlings.
