Pocket Gophers

Pocket gophers can cause substantial damage to fields, forages, utilities and irrigation lines. These small creatures can create big issues for agricultural operations.

About Pocket Gophers

Pocket gophers create large, crescent or fan-shaped dirt mounds quite different from the volcano-shaped mounds made by moles. Gopher mounds are sunken slightly from the surface. They are 7-13 inches wide and contain a dirt-plugged hole used as a tunnel entrance and exit. When identifying which areas of the field to bait, focus on areas around fresh mounds.

The bait’s palatability helps ensure effective control while its weatherability keeps it from losing effectiveness when wet.

Damage

Pocket gophers burrow in fields and around agricultural buildings – causing damage to forages, drainage, irrigation lines and utility cables. Pocket gopher digging can also bring fresh weed seeds to the soil surface, and gnawing can cause damage to fruit and nut tree roots.

Region information

Pocket gophers can be found in most states of the mainland U.S. and Canada but are primarily concentrated west of the Mississippi River.
