Are Your Rodents Wearing PPE?

It might sound like a joke – “Are your rodents wearing PPE?” – but it’s a serious question worth considering. It is a reminder that rodents do not follow protocols – and they certainly do not disinfect themselves before entering your barns.

While PPE, footbaths, and spraying disinfectants, are common biosecurity practices, rats and mice can completely bypass them. Once inside, they track in harmful pathogens like Avian Influenza, Salmonella, Fowl Cholera, MS, MG, and more – putting your entire operation at risk.

That’s why rodent control isn’t optional – it’s essential. Your first line of defense starts with proper bait station placement. For mice, bait station stations should be 8 to 12 feet apart; for rats, bait stations should be 15 to 30 feet apart.

There are two reasons for these distances.

  1. Mice and rats varying daily travel distances, and these spacing distance account for that.
  2. Doing so will give you the best chance for rodents entering the bait stations along the outside of your houses to find bait, or as I like to call it, another food source.

Rodents will take the first safe option they find – if that’s a hole in the barn rather than a bait station, they’re going in and staying. Once they have entered the barn, they have everything they need to survive, food, water, and a habitable and safe environment.

To maintain effectiveness, it’s important to keep bait fresh and rotate active ingredients regularly. Rotating helps prevent resistance and maintain continued control.

Always follow label directions – remember, the label is the law.

Rodents might not follow your biosecurity plan, but you can plan around them. Make your rodent control program part of your daily defense.
